civil war tribute month #2 and beginning quilting class?

CWT MONTH 2

here are the 4 blocks for Civil War Tribute  …don’t forget to add the extra strip on the top and bottom of each block… mine are obviously sideways…

Saturday was my 13 yr. old niece, Kaity’s first quilting class.  She is taking it at the shop along with Madelynn,  (Carole’s niece) and 5 other ladies.  Madelynn works at the shop on Thursdays and Saturdays and is a Senior at Neenah High School.  Kaity will be working at the shop starting this summer.  They both are pretty excited about their quilting class.  I remember how excited I was…it seemed to take forever for the next class to come…I couldn’t wait to learn the next step…

YES! I did finish my 100 scrappy 6 1/4″ basket blocks….actually before noon today. You are looking at 5 piles of 20… So I treated my sewing room to a sweeping and cleaning. Tomorrow…I will have to decide how to set them…scrappy or just one fabric…

wonderful trip to Iowa…even with the blizzard

Just want to say what a bunch of great Ladies and Bill in Iowa!  We had a full house for the morning lecture and 12 people in class in the afternoon despite the blizzard on Monday.  There was nothing keeping those tough Iowa quilter’s from missing their guild meeting.  The evening lecture only had 28, but still 28 is alot when there are highways closing and events.  Thanks to Jennifer and Debbie who took us out for dinner and for Lynn Stansfield who signed me up to come to Cedar Rapids IA in the first place.  There is still a lot of devestation there from the flood, from June 2008.  I cannot imagine what they went through.  We stayed at the Belmont Hill B&B which was also wonderful!  Here are some photos from the day…

This is Bill's show & tell. This was my favorite. I still have not made a big log cabin..I am jealous..his even looks like something i would pick out!

packing for Eastern Iowa Heirloom quilter’s workshop and lecture/trunk show

here is a peak at the quilts and wool things being packed for the trip on Sunday… Nick is worried about the weather, after his drive home from CA in all that mess…we escaped CA just in time…hope all our “friends” are doing OK… it was a great time at Road To California…I will be filling out a teaching form for next year…so hope to see you in a class, if you can.

I have a morning lecture, afternoon class and then an evening lecture on Monday in Cedar Rapids IA… I am looking forward to meeting more new quilting friends then…

I am also packing projects to sew and getting things fused when an ebay package arrived…look what was in the box..a scrap hexegon quilt top!  It is in fairly good shape..along with a note from one of the family members from 1968 passing in on to a relative for her to quilt.  It said the quilt has been in the family for awhile and that is was used in a “puff”…I think that means like a duvet, because i can see some left over stitching just around the edge.

close up...yummy old fabrics...in browns, madders and shirtings..

my sewing project for the drive are the blocks up top…there are four all together..as long as i am showing you some ebay stuff…here are a few more i rescued from ebay a while back, like december…quilt are cheaper in december…dealers want to sell…so I just could not pass these two up..

this one was from a kit, I admired it one year in a store front window in Paducah KY

Carole's 2009 Christmas present from me....i would have shown you it sooner, but for obvious reasons....Eldreth Pottery from PA made it from my Redware Crow design from our Autumn Gatherings book..

some of Carole's redware collection...

Carole's livingroom showcasing her prize winning quilt

other side of LR...see the box of mini quilts...

dining room...what can i say....its perfect..

gameboards...up the stairs...that cupboard is filled with quilts (wall hanging size)

It was a hectic week at home, but i got to do a little sewing with the girls on wednesday at Carole’s house…it is filled with antiques and prim decor…i wish i would have had her open that black primitive cupboard in her living room..i think there are about 100 quilts in it…big ones…we weren’t invited in the sewing room this time..but maybe the next..(too many new book projects in progress, she didn’t want to disturb)…so i will get the quilt picture of them in the cabinet then..something for you to look forward to.

all for now…LB

Road to California….the quilt show…my favorites..

I am out of “quilt show” shape…my legs felt like stuffed pounding sausages last night when i got to bed……..it must have been the cute shoes…today i wore the good shoes….Nick and I had dinner at the Panda Inn with Kaaren, Joyce and Jeanie…I think it was Jeanie..i was beat…a great bunch of California girls on Friday night….We meet so many wonderful people both customers and other vendors that we get to be friends with.  That is the best part of going to shows…

I think this was my favorite quilt in the show…it was about 12×50″ I am guessing, but it was small….the detail was awesome…she has done a minature quilt in every category in a show…. the people were great, some had bags with fabric hanging out…some had show programs…i wish i had more time to study it..but i had 20 minute to walk the show…i love her discription too.  She got a judges choice ribbon…

here is a bunch more quilts that I loved….sorry I did not have time to list or write down the makers names..

I took lots of picutres of just parts of quilts…maybe the quilting…lots of flowers…even if the quilt might be really whimsical or bright  i can still get  ideas/inspiration from these quilts to use in making folk art or primitive flowers…  Tomorrow i get to see Mary Ellen Hopkins lecture. before the show opens… I know she has been a quilting icon for many years, so I am looking forward to hearing her.  Sunday they are having a Sunday Saleabration we have some stuff we will be adding to our booth that will be discounted… this means we have to go to the booth extra early to set up…then I get to go see Mary Ellen, the show opens at 11am and is only open til 3:30…so i am wondering how that is going to go…never had a sale at a show before…hope it is packed!

great old quilt design...this was a close-up of some quilting on a quiltlove scrap quilts!

one down, three more to go…

nick and rudy

Good Morning! This is your favorite midwest quilting insomniac live from CA!  I have no trouble getting my time in on the treadmill here.  I am still on CST zone and I am an early riser to begin with…Nick seems to have no trouble adjusting to time here.  Here are some photos of the booth opening day…Nick shown here with his favorite quilt/kit in the booth…is all smiles before the show opening.  There are a lot of new “things” in the booth that are not on the site yet…we will get them on when we get home…so don’t worry if you see something you like…one of the things that is going well is Addies Tumbler Quilt.  It is a pre-cut quilt kit…it is hanging in the center of the the booth…it has 80 fabrics both mediums/darks with 1120 pre-cut tumblers, packed in those brown boxes by the quilt.     The last photos is a “sweetheart” that came into the booth and announced that we have the best wools to work with.  She brought her quilt that she used our pumpkin wools on for show and tell.  I am sorry I did not get her name as the booth was packed most of the day.  I got to sit down at about 5pm for a few minutes…Well today I will try and get some my favorite quilts in the show.  There are many police officers in the lobby right now…so i feel really safe..here with all there guns and belts with all of there gear…i asked if something was going on…and they said no…there are just here to protect us as added security for the show…wow… I wonder if they can do anything about the gas bombs that are sometimes left in our booth!…no..really we only had one yesterday.  It is a hazard of the job…well got to run…shower time…maybe i can get a little sewing time in yet this morning…
